Patrick Schembri

Patrick Schembri is currently an Associate Professor in Economics at Versailles University. He is a member of the Observatoire de Versailles Saint-Quentin en Yvelines, (OVSQ), which actively participates in the fields of climate change and sustainable development at national, European and international levels and contributes to global environmental governance through the climate research undertaken by the laboratories in the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute and their participation in the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). Dr Schembri is a research fellow at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Cultures Environments Arctic Representations Climate (CEARC), which is one of the research laboratories of the Observatoire de Versailles Saint-Quentin en Yvelines.

His academic qualifications are a MA in Economics and a Post Graduate Diploma in environmental economics from the Panthéon - Sorbonne University (Paris, France), in which he was awarded a PhD in 1997 on “Schumpeterian” economic growth models, technological innovation and environmental sustainability. For his doctoral dissertation, he benefited from a research grant of Brown University (Providence, MA, USA) in 1994. In 1998, Dr Schembri has been a Postdoctoral fellow within the CRITINC European Research Project, Making sustainability operational : CRITIcal Natural Capital and the implications of a strong sustainability criterion, funded by the DG XII of the European Commission and coordinated by the School of Politics, International Relations and the Environment, Keele University, U.K.

His research mainly focuses on the links between economic growth - technological change – natural environment, the transition process to the so-called green growth regime and the development paths in the so-called emerging countries. It covers diverse academic fields: macrodynamics and international economics, natural resources and environmental economics, the economics of climate change and ecological economics, theoretical and applied modeling. He published several articles on environmental policy, natural capital assessment, indicators for sustainable development. He also contributed in building the M3ED model, a multi-sectoral dynamic model mainly used for integrated energy-economy-environment assessment and the calculation of ecologically adjusted economic aggregates. These different fields of research led him to take part in several national and European research programmes concerning the French agriculture and water quality, greenhouse gas abatement through fiscal policy in the European Union, the economic and social aspects of environmental issues such as consumers lifestyles and pollutant emissions, and the application of non monetary procedures of economic valuation for managing a sustainable development.
