International Workshop « Local terminal risk as an analogue of existential risk: theoretical and empirical dimensions »

On May 14 and 15, a workshop closely linked to the PREFER project (ERC AdG 2021), coordinated within the CEARC laboratory, will take place with the support of, and at, the Institut d'Études Avancées de Paris. Please note that the workshop will be held entirely in English.

WORKSHOP TITLE

Local terminal risk as an analogue of existential risk: theoretical and empirical dimensions

WORKSHOP THEME:

This workshop will explore how local, non-Western situations of terminal risk can inform scientific debates about humanity, its plural nature, and the threats it faces. The aim is to broaden the discussion on existential risk.
“Local terminal situations” refer to situations in which communities see their ways of life disrupted to such an extent that some members express grief (sometimes potential) for their way of being in the world.
Existential risk refers to risks associated with hazards that threaten humanity's potential in a pan-generational way, whether the human species disappears or is no longer able to realize its potential.
The central question of the workshop is therefore how to reconcile the scales between the plural forms of local humanities and Humanity; how to conceptualize a struggle against the end of Humanity by accepting the pluriversal nature of human experience.

REGISTRATION

This workshop, which has limited capacity, is open to the public. Our hope is to have a dynamic exchange on our scientific questions with all those present over the course of two days.

If you would like to come and participate, you must register here

At the risk of repeating ourselves: the number of places is limited and, if you do attend, we strongly encourage you to be present on both days as we will be engaging in conversation with participants:
